Taormina lies about an hour's drive from Catania Airport via the E45. The hilltop town is close to Mt Etna, Sicily's active volcano, and has been a draw for tourists for centuries. Dedicated to St Nicholas, the cathedral houses works by Renaissance painter Antonino Giuffre, and a polyptych attributed to the school of Antonello de Saliba (1504).

The town is filled with interesting shops selling antiques or arts and crafts, coffee houses, bars and restaurants, and there is a happy, cosmopolitan feel about Taormina. Palazzo Corvaja was the seat of Sicily's Parliament in 1411, and who could resist its beauty? Built around several inner courtyards, the palazzo was once home to the noble family of the Corvajas. Today, the first floor of the palazzo hosts events and exhibitions, allowing everyone to enjoy the views across Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II from its mullioned windows.
