Enna is Italy's highest provincial capital, as it sits some 930 meters above sea level, sprawling down the hillsides with a multitude of ancient buildings and narrow, winding streets. Take the A19 from Catania to Enna, which takes about an hour and 10 minutes with car hire from Noleggiare. Enna is ca. 92 km distance from the airport.

Built in 1307 on the orders of Queen Eleanor of Anjou, Frederick III's wife, the Cathedral of Enna is one of the most beautiful churches in Sicily. Its interiors, including the magnificent central apse, which is covered in Baroque stuccoes, and the right side apse dedicated to the Madonna of the Visitation, are worth alone a visit to Enna. Paintings include a picture by Guglielmo Borremans, the painter from Antwerb, and paintings by Italian painter Adrian Bartolo Filippo Paladini (born in 1544, died 1616).

Treasures from the Cathedral of Enna and the vast collection amassed by Canon Alessi are kept at the Alessi Museum at Via Roma 465. A gallery full of masterpieces of religious art, a collection of Byzantine icons and gold jewelry from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as around 4,000 coins make the museum a must-see on a visit to Enna.

Impossible to miss, the Castello di Lombardia overlooking the eastern parts of Enna is one of the largest medieval castles in Italy. Divided into three spacious courtyards and a triangular fortress at its heart, the castle is a formidable fortification that has been watching over Enna since the early Middle Ages. King Frederic II of Sicily decided it would make for a good summer residence where he and his family could spend their holidays – he had the fortress changed into the relatively comfortable castle it is today, but remembered to order also a curtain wall with 20 towers to make sure no medieval paparazzi could look in. Only six of these formidable towers remain today, but they still allow a glimpse of how impressive the Castello di Lombardi must have been to contemporaries of Frederic II, the emperor who ruled over Sicily in the 12th century.

Chiesa di San Marco in Via Roma is another noteworthy church that should not be missed out. Building work began in 1492 or 1493, but what is still there today is mostly Baroque, after extensive reconstruction in later centuries. Inside, beautiful stuccoes decorate ceilings and walls, mostly putti, garlands of flowers and fruit. An 18th century tiled floor adds even more colour and splendour. Head to some of the smaller squares for pizzerias and bars, coffee shops and snack bars, as they are less touristy and more authentic, for example Piazza F Crispi just off Via Vulturo.
