One of these historic towns, Enna, lies some 91 km distance from Catania via the A19 motorway. Enna boasts many fine monuments, including the Cathedral of Enna, built 1307. On 2nd July every year, the Madonna della Visitazione procession brings thousands of people to Enna to see the patron saint of the city carried from the Cathedral through the streets of Enna. The statue of the Madonna, which is kept in a colourful marble niche at the Cathedral for the rest of the year, is covered in gilt and precious stones, and lives inside a large reliquary casket from the 16th century. More than 100 people carry the statue through Enna on their shoulders.

Another important event is Holy Week, which culminates in the Good Friday procession in which members of the 16 brotherhoods celebrate the Easter events. They wear traditional hoods to hide their faces. In the past, the 16 brotherhoods, or guilds, carried out important crafts in the town.

Floristella Grottacalda Mineral Park is an open-air museum located where Enna, Valguarnera, Aidone and Piazza Armerina meet, a few kilometers from the junction of Enna and Mulinello. Floristella Grottacalda Mineral Park contains two abandoned sulphur mines. The open-air museum aims to inform visitors about the long mining tradition of the area, showing for example the techniques of extracting and melting sulphur that were used in the past.

The Park also includes the wildlife reserve of the Ronza and the beautiful lake of Pergusa, and the lovely Pennisi Palace, the former home of the mine owner's family.
