Comiso in the municipality of Ragusa is one of Sicily's great Greek-era towns. Founded possibly by the Casmene people, whose own city was destroyed in 212 BC by the Romans, Comiso today is a beautiful blend of medieval Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance buildings. At the center of this lies the Cathedral Church of Santa Maria delle Stelle at Via S. Biagio number 16. Open in the mornings from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm, the church dedicated to Santa Maria del Mulino was rebuilt in 1699, after it collapsed in 1693 during an earthquake. The church has been given the status of basilica, and is the main church in Comiso. Built around the monasteries of St Nicolo and Saint Blaise, the town has its roots in Byzantine culture.

With the rise of feudal landowners in the area, splendid mansions and villas were built in and around Comiso. One of the finest examples is Villa Fegotto, a building at the heart of a large estate dating back to the beginnings of the 17th century. It first belonged to Girolamo Landolina, Baron of Carnicera. Now Villa Fegotto is open to the public, both house and gardens, (please see www.fegotto.it/en/ for opening times and directions) and is often used as a venue for events.

Comiso lies some 95 km distance from Catania and can be reached with a rental car from Maggiore via the SS194 and SS514 routes.

The village of Castel di Iudica is just a 35 km drive away from Catania - it is a perfect spot in the countryside where you can go for walks and experience Sicily pure. The hillside village may not have much to offer in terms of monuments, but the landscapes surrounding it are truly beautiful.

The city of Enna occupies roughly the centre of Sicily, in the province of Enna, some 91 km distance from Catania via the A19 motorway. Highlights on a visit to Enna are the Cathedral of Enna, built in 1307 to please Queen Eleanor of Anjou, the Hermitage of Montesalvo, and the Castello di Lombardi.

The hilltop Lombardy Castle of Enna is one of the largest medieval castles in Italy. Showing traces of Byzantine and Arabic architecture, the castle was reinforced during the reign of Frederic III of Aragon, King of Sicily in the 13th century. From the castle's three courtyards panoramic views reveal the beauty of the surrounding countryside. The Tower of Frederico, an earlier king from Swabia, stands in the city park of Enna, and resembles a medieval keep.
